I love looking at my client data to look for trends on what’s working well in my freelance writing business. Usually I look at things like business model, project types, target audience, and industry. I do this a couple times each year to help direct my prospecting strategy and replicate success. It’s an easy way to identify what kind of clients are likely doing well and ready to scale their workload, and which ones aren’t assigning much or taking a different direction.

A new client characteristic

I recently saw another freelancer whose advertised niche was businesses within a specific revenue range. 🫨

I had never considered this before! I really sort my project tracker in lots of different ways to predict trends in my writing business. But I’d never looked at the size of the business.

What happened when I looked at my clients’ revenue

I was very curious to see if I could find any revenue-based trends with my current clients. Three of my best-paying clients are somewhat large companies (I wasn’t sure how large) so I wanted to see if there were any similarities.

And guess what?

All three were in the same revenue range (which was much larger than I expected). This is incredible information to have for prospecting future clients.

Here’s how I’m using this info to prospect

Whether your client’s company is private or public, a quick Google search may help you find annual revenue figures. Publicly traded companies will have earnings calls sharing this information and any smaller company or startup that’s had fundraising will also likely disclose their financials online.

With that information, you can then search for other companies in the same revenue range, then whittle that down to industries you’d like to write for. Their marketing efforts may not be exactly the same, but they may have a similar budget and staffing structure as a company of the same size you’re already working with.
